This is the first post of 2018, and I hope that my readers and followers had a great Christmas and a terrific start to the New Year. For our debut post of 2018, I thought I would introduce you to a very special woman who I met about a month ago, at a Networking event. Her name is Phoebe Lay. The timing for this interview is impeccable because it is around this time, most people have planned their new year resolutions. I am one not to do resolutions per se, but I do set goals and tasks to accomplish using a chalkboard next to my bed. I hang it on the wall so when I wake up, it is the first thing I see with my written goals and tasks. Also every 2 years, I create a vision board using poster paper and magazine clippings.
Using this method works well, if you are visually inclined. By seeing a representation of your goal, it lodges itself in your mind's eye. Now with the image in your mind, everytime you see the picture on the poster, you associate it with the set goal. But, some people aren't able to stick to these methods and attack their goals by themselves which is why hiring a coach can do wonders. I often have hired coaches over the years to help me get to where I want to go. Phoebe's scope is unique and from the moment I met her I felt engaged by her passion to make a difference for others in particular women. Which is why I chose to interview her. So without further ado, here is Phoebe!
Phoebe, what were you doing with yourself before you became involved with this business venture of yours?
I was working full time as a radiographer having returned from working overseas and being abroad in Europe. My desire to start my own business really ignited after I started Matcha Sisters which was my first successful side business. My coaching business is tailored to aspiring businesswomen and its called Thrive and Shine Coaching.
I noticed much like myself you have a special focus on attending to the needs of women. Yours is women in business. What made you choose to focus on women only?
Well I’m a woman myself! And I know all about the “inner mean girl” we have inside who tells us why we can’t or that someone else’s idea is better. Success in business is all about mindset and when we can get that right we’re already halfway there. I believe every woman has the potential to thrive with the right mindset coach and I love working with women in business!
What kind of services do you offer women and what makes you different to the majority of other business coaches out there?
I offer one-to-one coaching for women who are either in business or wanting to start a business and are needing some direction. My services differ because I offer a wide range of support which I provide my clients. My main focus and expertise is in branding and marketing but I help my clients with all sorts of mindset coaching such as helping them overcome fear, procrastination and giving them the tools to get out there and build an epic business.
I read that you are creating a social enterprise that helps human trafficking victims? Tell us more about that?
Yes, Matcha Sisters is like my little baby. It’s the first online business I started up and I created it with a vision to give back. To this day we have donated thousand of dollars to help restore the lives of rescued human trafficking victims with the help of Hagar Australia.
That is incredible! It appears that ambition runs in the family. Tell us about how your mum influenced you to take this journey and her achievements?
My mum is amazing. From a young age I watched her break the status quo for women in her generation and lead a life that was congruent to her truth. She always wanted to start her own salon from when she was a young age but came to Australia with no qualifications and zero experience. She’s now the proud owner of an exceptional day spa called Exceptional Beauty and has taught me so much about branding and marketing!
Best result you had with a client?
My best result would probably be the one to one work I did with one of my clients who was not living out her truth. She initially told me she wanted to work on her productivity and in the end we delved deeper and till this day she continuously thanks me for enabling her to be the best version of herself.
Most challenging thing you have faced in this business or in life in general?
The most challenging thing I’ve faced in business would be getting over the voice inside that told me I had nothing special to offer. I remember when I first started that doubt would creep in and whenever it did I would struggle to sell myself.
In my mind, my marketing would be mediocre and I felt like I didn’t have a voice.
I overcame this eventually with a coach and since then I’ve always believed that coaches do a phenomenal job in eliciting change and it just confirmed that for me.
Change is as good as a holiday apparently! Where have you been overseas and what has been your favourite place to visit?
Oh I’ve been everywhere! I’ve travelled to Europe four times, three of which was solo and I lived in the U.K. for a little while before I came back to start my own business. My favourite spot would definitely be Greece and Portugal. My dad’s half Portuguese so Portugal always brings back some childhood memories thanks to the food and the influence it had on East Timorese cuisine
How can women get in touch with you and do business with you?
You can get in touch with me through a number of ways. The easiest would be to book in a session with me to have a chat. I offer free non-obligatory first meetings and that can be booked easily through this hyperlink on Calendly.
Finally, who has been your biggest influence and do you have any famous quotes that you live by?
My biggest influence would definitely be my faith. My favourite verse in the bible is:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
